"October 5th George Cobham [son of] George and Ann Percival Watson [of] Pimlico [by] Rev Wm Robt Bawker (?)"

Extract from George Watson's family in Australia:

"George Cobham Watson, the eldest surviving son of George Watson, was born at Brighton Barracks on 23rd May, 1823, and baptised at Charlotte Street Chapel, Pimlico, in London, a few months later. He was 16 years old when he arrived in Australia.

He spent some time with his family at the Manning River cattle run and sometime later worked his father's property on the Macleay River. On 18th June, 1853, when he was 35, he married Mary Ann Farnell, grand-daughter of John Squire, one of the first ten free settlers in Australia. Squire had prospered at Kissing Point, later known as Ryde, in Sydney, where he had taken up a farm when Governor Phillip in 1792 established the district as the "Farms of the Eastern Boundary" of the settlement. (Mary Ann Farnell was also well known as the sister of John Squire Farnell, later a New South Wales Minister of Lands, who gained notoriety "by his Land Act of 1884).

George Cobham Watson let the property on the Macleay River and settled at Kissing Point. He eventually inherited his father-in-law's farm and contributed to the memories of the early days of Ryde, when the landmarks were "Squire's famous brewery, wharf and hop gardens", Squire's Inn, St. Anne's Church and the grave of Bennelong, the "King" of the aborigines who had negotiated with Governor Phillip in 1788. George Watson became Crown Lands Ranger for Ryde, Hunter's Hill and the Field of Mars and died, aged 55, at Kissing Point on 4th March, 1879. His son, Charles Watson, sold the ten acre farm after his mother's death in 1913.

George Cobham Watson had four daughters and a son. His eldest daughter, Clara, was born in 1859 and married Mr. Brady. They had no children and she died in 1946. Emma Elizabeth was born in 1861. She married Mr. Lamont and had no issue. Louisa was born in 1863. She married Mr. T. Nicholson, had no children, and died on 7th September, 1949. Charles Cobham Watson, George's only son, was born on 12th April, 1866. He married Estelle Deboos and had six children. He became Sheriff of Darlinghurst Court and Sydney's Assistant Coroner. The youngest daughter, Eliza Percival, was born in 1869 and died unmarried at the age of 25.

Letter from The Deanery, Guernsey, Channel Islands:

THE DEANERY
GUERNSEY
11th April, 1978.

Dear Mr Kitzmiller,

By a lucky chance it turns out that
Elizabeth Jane Marter was baptised in the
parish church of St. Peter Port. The
following refers to the event:

"Elizabeth-Jeanne, fille de Thomas-Pierre
Marter, et de Marie Caldow sa femme, nee
le 10 de Julliet 1816, et batisse le 18 de
Dec. suivant, a eu pour parrain Thomas-
Pierre Marter, et pour marraines Elizabeth
Marter et Anne Marvey [sic]."

Thomas-Pierre does not appear in
the Register. I hope you will find this
information useful. May I ask you to be
good enough to send me a fee of L1 for the
search.

Yours sincerely

Frederick Cozman

Translation of Baptism entry above:

Elizabeth Jane, daughter of Thomas Peter
Marter, and of Mary Caldow his wife, born
the 10th of July 1816 and baptized the 18th of
Dec. following, has had for godfather Thomas
Peter Marter, and for godmothers Elizabeth
Marter and Anne Marvey.

From the Priaulx Library, Candie Road, St. Peter Port, Guernsey, 23 June 1989:

Your letter of June 7th to the Dean of Guernsey requesting information concerning the Caldow/Marter family has been passed to this library since we hold microfilm copies of many local records, including parish registers. In response to your request I have searched the records carefully.

I have consulted the records of the Town Church where the entry for Elizabeth-Jeanne Marter is to be found but I have found no reference to any of the other names you mention. I have tried the registers of other parishes with the same result.

The names Marter and Caldow are not local names and I have checked with the index of the census, which although of a later date, would give an indication if the families had been present in the island, but again without success.

On page 12, the report states:

Conwell (1) has nothing but praise for the fire department. He states, "Although their efficient chief (Thomas Marter) who for so many years had directed their movements, was absent from the city, yet so thorough was their discipline, and so earnest was their desire to be of service, that all their work was done with the most commendable promptness and precision." Under Chief Marter were three District Engineers supervising Engine Companies No. 1, 2 and 3, Hose Companies No. 1, 2 and 3, and Hook and Ladder. The total strength of the Fire Department was 59 officers and men. The Department had 4 steam fire engines, several hose wagons, a hook and ladder truck and 1 coal wagon.
