4067 “I believe Captain William Marter’s parents to have been William Richard
Marter and his wife, Marie Anne Gibert of Huguenot descent. Captain William willed
£50 each to his aunts, Hester, Elizabeth and Susannah Gibbert (Gibert), and Marie
Anne had corresponding sisters, Esther, Suzanna and Elizabeth. However that is
the only pointer to that family.

William Richard had brothers Allen and Nicholas, and they were, I believe, the sons of Peter Marter. Allen leaves most of his money to his nephew [Capt.] William, son of his late brother and his wife who appears in his Will as both Mary Ann and Marian.

“If I am right, and this is the correct family, Hackney, where William was born, was in those days a good area to live. It is very scruffy nowadays, but then would have bordered on open country. I have no other reference to the other two children of William Richard and Mary Anne. I only picked these three up on the IGI and they may well have others, but Allen Marter in his Will only mentions William and his neice, Ann, daughter of his brother Nicholas.

Again if I am right, I would expect William Richard’s father to turn out to be Peter as Allen asks to be buried in Bunhill Burying Ground near my father (unnamed) or brother, William Marter. In Bunhill Burying Ground, there is a Peter Marter,
buried 1742; William Robt. (Rich.?), buried 1742; Allen, buried 1748.
